How to cook halloumi cheese
Learn the best ways to cook halloumi and find out easy recipes for this versatile Cypriot cheese. We like it grilled, griddled or pan-fried and served with fresh, contrasting flavours.
How to pan fry halloumi:
If your block of halloumi has a seam keep the uncut edge perpendicular to the direction you are slicing - this will stop the pieces falling apart. You don't need to add oil when cooking halloumi as it has quite a high fat content.
- Cut the halloumi into 1cm thick slices and dry fry in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat.
- Cook halloumi for 1-2 mins. When it starts to brown and crisp up turn the pieces over and cook on the other side for another minute or two.
How to cook halloumi on a barbecue
- To cook halloumi al fresco, cut the block into thick cubes and thread onto skewers (soak wooden skewers in water for around 20-30mins before using).
- Brush them with a little olive oil, a squeeze of lemon juice too if you like, and cook on the barbecue grill for 5-10 mins, turning regularly, until golden and a little charred on all sides.
